The first photo runby of the trip was held in Columbus, MT. We all unloaded on the controlled siding and walked across the mainline while the train backed into position. This is where the entire train load of people were introduced to the loud vocal cords of the SP&S 700.

This is a photo of the dome car we rode in all three day. Now named City of Livingston, she was originally owned by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy and was used on the Twin Cities Zephyr from her construction in 1947 until transfer to Amtrak in 1971. She was originally named Silver Scene.

Between Noxon and Heron, on board services manager Mike Phillips realized we were going to be early into Sandpoint. Because of this Bob Bateman (MRL pilot) requested to have the train put in the siding at Heron and have the grain train following us run around. So we made our first trip into a siding at Heron and let the grainer around us.

After the Livingston depot stop the SP&S 700 began the first of four major hills she'd climb on the westbound trip. Here she is just out of Livingston attacking the 1.9% grade of Livingston hill. It was here in the war years of the 1940's that Steve's Great Uncle Bill ran helper engines to Bozeman.

Just below the old station site of Weed lies a homestead which looks to be abandon intact. The fill for the track on the upper switchback can be seen just above the old farm.

In the mid-1960's the Northern Pacific decided the maintenance on the Iron Ridge Tunnel was too much, so they daylighted it by making a cut through the ridge seen here. The old tunnel is in place under the ridge and can be seen from the train.
